Should students write note names into sheet music?
Written permanently into the score: the concern is justified, and research supports it. As temporary support designed to fade, the picture is different, and the difference is the design. This page states the evidence fairly, including the parts that argue against products like ours, because Notalune was designed from this evidence, not around it.
The objection, stated fairly
Teachers warn that letter names glued to the score keep eyes on letters instead of staff patterns, delaying interval and pattern reading. The research backs the concern on several fronts:
Dependency is documented in music specifically. In a study of 92 beginners using color-coded pitch notation, some students became dependent on the coding and were unable to read uncolored notation well, and the coding showed no clear achievement benefit. Letter-name-first instruction lost to pattern instruction. In a year-long experiment with 90 beginning wind players, sound-before-symbol tonal-pattern instruction beat letter-name-first instruction on sight-reading. Support that helps novices can harm intermediates. The expertise reversal effect: guidance that benefits beginners becomes redundant and even counterproductive as knowledge grows, an argument against one fixed support level for every learner. And fluent music reading ultimately rests on fast recognition of staff patterns and chunks, not note-by-note naming, a note-by-note overlay models beginner-stage decoding, not the target behavior. We agree with the teachers on this. (The broader teacher consensus against writing letters into scores is experience-based pedagogy rather than trial data, we treat it with respect either way.)
What the learning research says about good support
Scaffolding research defines effective support by three properties: it is contingent (given when needed), it fades, and it hands responsibility back to the learner. The closest experimental model for progressively hiding labels is worked-example fading: full guidance first, removed stepwise, yields better learning than unsupported practice or abrupt withdrawal (shown in math and science domains, not music). And there is a counterweight to the dependency finding. The dependency worry is fair, one classic study saw beginners lean on color-coded notes. But a later 23-week randomized study found learners taught with supplemented notation read plain notation slightly better too. A scaffold does not automatically block transfer; design decides the outcome. The honest limits
No direct study of letter-name overlays on scores exists. The closest evidence is color-coded notation, teaching-method comparisons, and fading research from other domains. Notalune is designed from that adjacent evidence, and we present it as such. We do not claim the fading design is itself experimentally proven for music overlays; it is the design the available evidence most clearly argues for, while permanent overlays are the design it most clearly argues against. Recognition itself is honest about its limits too: a confident-but-wrong name can still appear, which is why silence is always paired with the certainty view and two-tap corrections.
